DIESEL MECHANIC (EXPERIENCED)

Under limited supervision, perform advanced servicing, repairs and maintenance of company vehicles and equipment.

This position is tasked with the responsibility of coaching, training and mentoring all lower level classifications to improve their technical and job skills. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the shift supervisor and fleet manager who reviews work by the quality and timeliness of repairs and by the performance of equipment serviced.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Performs preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and modifications to assigned vehicles, equipment.
  2. Assisting senior mechanics in the completion of work assignments.
  3. Performs general mechanical overhaul and repair work on trucks, tractors, loaders, automobiles and other related types of vehicles and equipment.
  4. Inspects, adjusts and replaces components and related parts including valves, pistons, main bearing assemblies and cooling, fuel, and exhaust systems.
  5. Repairs and overhauls transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies and ignition systems.
  6. Inspect, repairs and reassembles air compressors, pumps and related equipment including repairs, rebuilds and installing hydraulic jacks, pumps, cylinders and controls.
  7. Welds and modifies equipment and fabricates parts as needed or as directed.
  8. Make road calls to service-disabled vehicles and trouble shoot.
  9. Coaches, trains and mentors C-class mechanics to improve their job skills.
  10. Ensures that all equipment released to the field meets or exceeds DOT standards.
  11. Keep accurate records to meet all DOT requirements for record keeping, computer and parts.
  12. Maintains a clean and safe work environment according to company standards.
  13. Follows all safety policies and procedures.
  14. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor.
  15. This is a safety sensitive position.

REQUIREMENTS

  1. High school education or equivalent.
  2. 3-4 years heavy equipment/automotive repair experience.
  3. Extensive knowledge of automotive mechanics thorough knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions and hydraulics.
  4. PA state inspection license.
  5. Valid CDL (minimum of a B class) license with air brake endorsement.
  6. Certification under federal Department of Transportation guidelines for brake adjustment and repair.
  7. Welding/fabricating skills.
  8. C certification
  9. Ability to read and comprehend schematics, operation, service, and safety manuals.
  10. Basic computer skills.
  11. Follow all safety procedures.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Mechanical or trade school certificate
  2. ASE certificate

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  1. Climb into, out and on top of equipment.
  2. Lift, carry and push/pull heavy items and/or equipment.
  3. Ability to lift to 50 pounds.
  4. Must be able to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The essential functions of this job are performed in both a shop environment and outside in various weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold. Daily, the essential functions of the job require incumbents to climb ladders, stoop, crouch, stand and occasionally crawl into confined spaces. Incumbents are exposed to intermittent loud noise, vibrations, dust, fumes, gases smoke, grease, chemicals, oils and cement powder.
